Guide

BEST SWING TRADING JOURNALS.

Why swing traders need something different

The majority of trading journals were designed around day trading, and it shows in what they measure. Time-of-day heat maps, per-session P&L, minute-chart replays, commission analysis across hundreds of round trips a month.

A swing trader takes far fewer trades than a day trader and holds each one across many sessions. At that frequency commissions are noise. And far more than the entry and exit matters: what the market was doing while you held, how far the trade ran in your favour before you got out and how far it went against you first, how large the position was against the account, and what you did to it along the way. That whole window is what a day trading journal is not built to look at.

What makes the best swing trading journal

When deciding on a swing trading journal, there are six questions you need answered to see whether the journal will actually help you or not. Every journal in this category should be trying to answer them, and each of the products below answers at least some of them well.

  1. Would a different exit have made you more money? The rarest capability in the category, and the one that changes behaviour most, because it answers "should I have held to the 21 EMA?" with your own filled trades rather than an opinion.
  2. How big should the position have been? A calculator is a spreadsheet. Sizing that moves with your rolling win rate, and that shows what it would have recommended on every past trade, is a system.
  3. What is happening in the trades you are holding right now? Open risk as a share of the account, each position's ADR multiple, the worst case if every stop hit today. Your broker shows none of this, and a journal that only reads closed trades cannot either.
  4. Which of your setups actually makes money? Aggregate expectancy hides the answer. You need it per setup, or you are averaging a good strategy and a losing one together and calling the result an edge.
  5. How good were the entry and the exit themselves? Separate from whether the trade won. Did you pay up chasing it, or get filled at the pivot? Did you exit into strength, or give back most of the move first? Two trades can both close green with completely different execution behind them, and only one of them is repeatable.
  6. Was this trade taken in an environment that suits your strategy? The same breakout that works with the index trending above a rising 50-day fails repeatedly in choppy tape. A journal that cannot tell you which condition you were trading in cannot tell you whether a losing run means your edge is gone or the market simply was not offering it.

1. TradePiko — from $20/month

Best for: swing traders holding positions for days to weeks who want the questions above answered rather than a wall of statistics.

The only journal on the list that fully answers all the questions above, with much more. Curated specifically for swing and position traders.

Key features

Pricing: Standard $20/month covers the journal, auto-generated charts, Live Position Analytics, tagging, the Mistake Tracker and broker sync. Pro $40/month adds the simulation engine, the Position Sizing Advisor, MFE / MAE, the AI Trade Coach, the Daily Report Card, Model Books and the PIKO 50. 7-day free trial, no free tier.

2. Tradezella — from $35/month

Best for: traders who run more than one style and want a single polished tool that does a great deal competently.

The most recognisable name in the category and the most refined interface on this list. Its centre of gravity is the intraday trader — the replay is tick-level and the reporting is built for volume — but very little of it is wasted on a swing trader.

Key features

Against the six questions

Replay and backtesting give it a real answer to whether the trade could have gone differently. R-multiple statistics and trade rating speak to sizing and to execution quality, and the reporting answers which setups make money. What it does not do is watch the position while you are still in it, or size the next one for you.

Pricing: Essential $35/month, Pro $59, Ultra $99. No free tier. Auto-sync is on every tier, but Essential connects one account.

3. TradesViz — from $19.99/month

Best for: traders who want the maximum amount of data and enjoy configuring a tool until it shows exactly what they want.

The most analysis per dollar anywhere in this category, and the easiest thing here to try properly before paying for it.

Key features

Against the six questions

Its exit-analysis charts get closer to "would a different exit have made more money" than anything else here short of a simulator, and the pivot grid will break expectancy down by setup, symbol or day of week as thoroughly as you are willing to configure it. Sizing and open-position risk are not where it puts its weight.

Pricing: free Basic tier, Pro $19.99/month, Platinum $29.99. Auto-sync starts at Pro — the free tier is manual import only.

4. TraderSync — from $29.95/month

Best for: traders whose activity runs across several asset classes rather than equities alone.

One of the longest-established journals here, with the largest broker network in the category and analytics that understand instruments most competitors treat generically.

Key features

Against the six questions

The Playbook is the standout, attacking "which setups make money" and "how good was the execution" in the same place — it is the closest thing here to TradePiko's per-tag expectancy. The replay answers the exit question for an intraday trade more convincingly than for a three-week hold.

Pricing: Pro $29.95/month, Premium $49.95, Elite $79.95. 7-day trial, no free tier. Auto-import is on every tier; Pro caps you at five connected accounts.

5. Tradervue — from $29.95/month

Best for: anyone whose review process involves another person — a coach, a mentor, or a study group.

The veteran of the category, and still the most natural fit for putting your trading in front of someone else and having them work through it with you.

Key features

Against the six questions

MFE/MAE and the exit performance metric are a genuine partial answer to the exit question without a simulator behind them, and the tagging covers the setup question. The rest of the six sit outside what it sets out to do.

Pricing: Silver $29.95/month, Gold $49.95. Broker sync is listed on both paid tiers.

6. Edgewonk — $197/year

Best for: traders who are confident the problem is discipline rather than data.

Sold as a yearly licence rather than a monthly subscription, and the deepest thing here on the behavioural side of trading.

Key features

Against the six questions

It comes at them from the other side. Strategy Lab and Chart Lab cover the setup and sizing questions, but the question Edgewonk is really built for is what you were doing while the trade was open and whether that is repeatable. It asks more of you than anything else here and gives more back if you answer honestly.

Pricing: $197/year, annual licence only, 14-day money-back guarantee. Only MetaTrader 4 and 5 sync automatically; every other broker imports from a file.

7. Spreadsheet — free

Best for: traders who want no subscription at all and are willing to do the work by hand.

Not a product, but genuinely the right answer for some people. It fails in a predictable order: manual entry becomes tedious enough to skip, then MFE and MAE need intraday highs and lows for every hold, then pulling the chart for an eight-month-old trade takes long enough that you stop. Getting the data in at all starts with exporting it from your broker.

What they cost

Taken from each product's own pricing page in September 2026. Most of these discount 20–25% for annual billing. Pricing in this category changes often — check each site before buying.

How to actually choose

Ignore feature lists, including the one above. Take the three questions you most want answered about your own trading — "which setup makes me money?", "am I exiting too early?", "what do my mistakes cost?" — and check whether a tool answers them in two clicks from real data.

Then trial it and see whether you are still using it in sixty days. A journal's only real specification is whether you keep filling it in.

Try the one we build

Broker sync from 40 brokerages, a daily chart on every entry and exit, MFE and MAE calculated for you, and a simulation engine that re-runs your real trades under a different exit. 7-day free trial.
